Tesco to open customer-free 'dark stores'

Telegraph.co.uk

Tesco, the UK supermarket chain that retailers from across the world watch and copy, has gone into 'the dark' for its on-line business.

To get more efficiency into their picking and packing for its customer orders, they have moved out of fulfillment in regular outlets and built fully stocked supermarkets, which aren't open to the punter.

Stripped of point-of purchase materials and other customer enticement devices, the Tesco order fillers race around the dedicated customer-free shops, unhindered by shopping trolleys and questions, to fill on-line orders at high speed rates.

There must be other uses to these 'dark' supermarkets (researchers, pack designers: note fully stocked shelves without distraction).
